About Niemann Pick type C, the Parseghian Fund at Notre Dame, and the Bike Ride

Niemann-Pick Type C disease (NPC) is a rare, genetic cholesterol storage disorder that is always fatal and took the lives of three grandchildren of legendary Notre Dame football coach Ara Parseghian.

After learning the devastating diagnosis, Cindy and Michael Parseghian formed a foundation to find a cure to save their children’s lives and most recently partnered with Notre Dame to continue these efforts.

This will be the 10th Bike Ride for a Cure which raises funds and awareness for the Ara Parseghian Medical Research Fund (APMRF) at Notre Dame. Over the past 10 years, the bike rides have visited over 160 cities, held over 135 events, been featured in a number of news stories and articles, and raised over $2.5 million for NPC disease research.

This year, students from the ESTEEM master’s program at Notre Dame are organizing the 2022 bike ride, which is a three-day ride from May 8-11, 2022, traveling a modified route from Grand Rapids, MI to Chicago, IL.

* The ESTEEM program is one of the world's premier graduate programs in technology and entrepreneurship with global reach and impact. In the program, Science and Engineering students focus on the commercialization of research and technology through innovation and entrepreneurship.
